Take on the challenge! Iconic mountain route maps

This month, we're highlighting our Challenge Maps, created for some of the UK's most iconic mountain routes. From the Bob Graham to the Paddy Buckley, the Charlie Ramsay to the Frog Graham and Gerry Charnley, these Rounds represent adventure in its purest form.

Each map showcases the full challenge route, ready for you to head out and take on the challenge yourself. Whether you're aiming for a sub-24 hour round, setting a personal goal or just looking to explore a new area these maps are the perfect way to continue your adventure.

Bob Graham Round

The Bob Graham Round is one of the most iconic challenges in UK fell running. The map covers the original 72-mile route first completed by Bob Graham himself back in 1932 - a remarkable achievement that has since inspired generations of runners.

Split into four sections to make navigation easier, the map guides you around the full loop, starting and finishing at the Moot Hall in Keswick, right in the heart of the Lake District. Along the way, you'll visit 42 named fells; whilst the map shows a suggested route line between each of them, you are free to choose your own way between each summit, making every attempt unique.

In 2022, Jack Kuenzle set an astonishing new record, completing the round in just 12 hours and 23 minutes!

Paddy Buckley Round

Also known as the Welsh Classic Round, the Paddy Buckley Round takes you deep into the rugged beauty of Snowdonia. First completed by Wendy Dodds on 30th May 1982, this incredible 61-mile circuit includes 47 summits and showcases some of Wales' most famous mountains - including Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the Glyderau and the Carneddau.

It's an extremely challenging route, but highly rewarding. The current record is held by Finlay Wild, who completed the Round solo and unsupported in an impressive 15 hours and 14 minutes.

Charlie Ramsey Round

The Charlie Ramsay Round is Scotland's answer to the classic 24-hour mountain challenge. The story begins in 1964 when Philip Tranter first linked these mountains in a single journey. Then in 1978, Charlie Ramsay set out from Glen Nevis Youth Hostel with the bold aim of climbing 24 Munros within 24 hours. He returned in 23 hours and 58 minutes - and a legendary challenge was born.

The route takes in the Mamores, the Grey Corries, the Aonachs, Carn Mòr Dearg and Ben Nevis, creating a spectacular and demanding circuit. Today, many runners still aim for that coveted sub-24-hour finish. The current record, set by Finlay Wild in 2020, stands at a remarkable 14 hours and 42 minutes!

Gerry Charnley Round

The Gerry Charnley Round is a 38-mile cloverleaf challenge set in the Lake District. Originally devised in 1984 to honour Gerry Charnley, the route offers a brilliant test of endurance and navigation.

Our map was published in partnership with South Ribble Orienteering Club as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. The route is defined by 26 control points and gives you the option of tackling three individual circuits - Eskdale, Borrowdale and Langdale - or combining them into the full 38-mile Round.

The current fastest time belongs to Darren Parker, who completed the challenge in 17 hours and 13 minutes.

Frog Graham Round

For those who like to mix their running with wild swimming, the Frog Graham Round offers something truly different.

This unique swim-run challenge links 18 fell tops and 4 lakes in the Lake District, covering around 40 miles and over 15,000 feet of ascent. Starting and finishing in Keswick, the route was created by Peter Hayes and takes inspiration from the legendary Bob Graham Round - but with a splash!

The current record is 10 hours and 25 minutes, set by Richard Anderson. The map also includes the Tadpole Round, an 11km route that's perfect if you're new to swim-run challenges and want to dip your toe in.
